Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search box is transmitted directly to the outside company that operates that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its results. We do not retain or record those search terms on our systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
When you email us, the message may be kept long enough to respond and maintain the exchange. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our servers automatically receive basic technical information when a page loads, including:
- Page-view times and the pages visited
- Your device's assigned IP address
- Browser name and version
- Operating system and device category
- Time spent on viewed pages
- The referring site, when available
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files placed on a device. We and our analytics services use them to measure traffic patterns, such as popular pages and where visits end. You may block cookies in your browser, although some website functions may then work differently.
What We Do With This Data
- Delivering search queries to the selected partner
- Operating and improving website speed and reliability
- Finding and repairing technical problems
- Measuring which content visitors use
- Presenting advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
We do not keep, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. Dickenson County content identifies public custodians and explains requests to the Sheriff, court clerks, Virginia State Police CARE/CCRE, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Visitor data is not compiled into consumer reports or criminal-record profiles about other people.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies run the search boxes. Their privacy policies, retention periods, and sharing rules apply to information entered there. We do not control those practices, so review the provider's policy before submitting a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to the Dickenson County government, Virginia courts, state agencies, legal-help resources, or outside search services. Once you leave this website, the destination's privacy terms apply. Review them before giving that site personal information.
Some advertising providers use activity from more than one website to select ads. That processing takes place through the provider's systems.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal information. Data may be available to:
- Analytics vendors that measure use and performance
- Search providers processing a query you submit
- Advertising networks serving material on the pages
- Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal demand
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable, commonly used safeguards protect the information we collect. No internet service is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee that a breach will never occur.
Users Under 18
The website is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone younger than 18. If we learn that a minor provided such data, we will remove it.
Your Data Rights
Your place of residence may provide rights beyond those listed here. Virginia's Freedom of Information Act, Virginia Code § 2.2-3700 et seq., governs access to records of Virginia public bodies, not private-site visitor files. Criminal-history dissemination is separately limited by Virginia Code § 19.2-389. Subject to applicable law, you may:
- Request deletion of personal information
- Ask for access to personal data we maintain about you
- Seek correction of inaccurate information
- Object to certain forms of processing
